We invite everyone to use our new Trail Map and take “Trail Treks”!

It’s amazing how many hidden gems are located along the Commodore Trail!

The Friends have curated our favorite Treks across the full 5 miles of the Trail highlighting nature, history and hospitality.

Each Trek explores a different part of the Trail and offers age-inclusive activities that can be enjoyed on wheels, foot and even by water!

The Trail leads to …

“Trail Trek” to historic Brickell Avenue

One of the most beautiful stretches of the Commodore Trail is its northern Trail entrance marked by the gate on the corner of the Rickenbacker Causeway entrance and Brickell Ave. You can also access Brickell Avenue from S. Miami Ave and SE 32nd Rd. near Vizcaya.

This historic street is lined with grand estates that run along the Bay. Former residents include Sylvester Stallone & Madonna. A magnificent tree canopy makes it a shady retreat from the summer heat. On a recent Trek, we spotted flowering Royal Poincianas and a Hoya blooming in the center median.

Explore Alice C. Wainwright Park. The park is mid-block – don’t let the small unassuming park entrance fool you. Once you enter it’s a WOW! and offers access to a newly renovated Bay Walk with gorgeous views of Biscayne Bay. There is a playground, basketball court, covered picnic pavilions, an outdoor gym and a beautifully landscaped path running along the water. It also has water fountains and a public restroom.

Be sure to read the park’s historic marker to learn more about Alice C. Wainwright and her impressive legacy in Miami.

Brickell Ave. can be your destination or a stop along the way connecting you to a walk or bike ride on the Rickenbacker Trail to the east or the new Underline Trail to the West.

Happy Trekking!!

“Feed your inner plant explorer” with a visit to The Kampong on Douglas Rd.

This historic garden is part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden network. Originally the home of famed plant explorer David Fairchild, the property includes his former home, sweeping lawns that lead to spectacular bay views, and extensive plant and tree collections. There is also another historic building on the property that was the original office and stables of Miami’s first female physician, Eleanor Galt Simmons, who set up her practice there in 1882.

“The Kampong began not as a botanical garden, but as a personal collection motivated by Dr. David Fairchild’s love for, and scientific interest in, ornamental, edible, and ethnobotanic plants. Dr. Catherine Sweeney continued to develop the collection in that spirit. It contains a diverse array of plants from the tropics and warm subtropics, including tropical fruits, palms, flowering trees, flowering shrubs, and vines.”

The Kampong is open Tuesday – Saturday. For hours and to book guided tours visit the website.

They offer Eco discounts on admission if you walk, cycle, or rideshare there. Which the Friends think is GREAT!
